Starfly is an exciting children’s novel about the early life of a young adventurous sheepdog, on Bluebell Farm, where championship sheepdogs are raised. All the characters, in particular Sally the sheep are very strong and comical. A story not to be missed with both a dramatic beginning as Starfly enters the world (tissues may be required!) and a nail biting ending. The study of empathy is strong throughout the book. The illustrations are wonderful and give the book more of an appeal to some of the younger readers.

Aimed at an audience aged 8-11 years, Starfly can also be used as a Year 5 and 6 teaching text, where the study of effective use of characterisation develops the narrative text and can be discussed to look in detail at how the narrative planning builds up with tension and plot. There is an incredible dilemma which encourages children to discuss how events will end.

Starfly’s final chapter was influenced by a Year 6 group of children and it is one child’s original ideas that shaped its events. This two week project helps raise standards in narrative writing and is great practice for Year 6 SATs and gives more of a real context to the writing process.
